Balance. Agility heroes don't get as much hp so they need to gain some ehp from somewhere, downside is they can be nuked more easily. Str heroes get the raw hp. Int heroes get nukes. This is a gross over simplification but you get the idea.

ranged heroes use magic energy most of the time

Cause STR gives added HP and HP regen, and INT gives added MP and Mana Regen.
So AGI gives armor and added AS.

In wc3 and in dota sorta is still agility gives attack speed too. More agile heroes will take less damage cuz their bodies are more flexiable. You see it in everyday life, fat people just keel over really fast.
