i don't come in contact with those much (not sure but they were either very rare or didn't exist at all during the historical period we're focusing at) but i don't think their weight gets much farther than 1,5kg or so
they have weight and even moves that might seem slow definitely have the power to injure or even kill someone but they are made to be wielded by people, not by superheroes
but don't expect to keep swinging it for more than a minute nonstop (or several minutes if you're training like a madman)
but afaik even later the twohanded swords weren't used much
i'm not anywhere near being an expert though, it's more like stuff that i come across
i might be able to get some answers if you have some specific questions
btw, where in romania do you live? last year we were at oradea near the hungarian borders on some historical festival and we might go there again next summer
longswords need two hands due to balance not mass, you want proper leverage with a long blade and handle
even maces and axes aren't that heavy, they are just balanced in such a way to BEHAVE like they're heavier due to mass distribution
@arin I live in Serbia, so it's not about inflated prices as much as I wanted something really nice, but it turned out the shipping would be insane and also didn't want to deal with customs taxes... so yeah
btw did everyone wear heavy armor? or are shirtless beasts jumping over dead bodies swinging swords like conan just a myth
no
yes
this is what you could call light armor i guess? which is something that 99% of people have - it's pretty ok to fight only in this (regarding upper body protection, ofc not entire body), it's relatively light, you can feel things but most of the time you just get bruises or so. it's actually not that easy to move in as you'd expect, especially if it has no holes in it like in the image - the bottom part can go down to knees and it's kinda skirt-like so your legs can move, some of them (mine included) have holes in armpits to move better.
mostly you can get some accessories to this like some chainmail parts on top of it (mine has it around the neck) or pieces of metal on elbows or w/e.
then you can smack a chainmail on top of it. suprisingly, it doesn't limit you in movement at all, other than being pain in the ass to get in and out of and being rather heavy so like holding your shield and sword up is even more difficult. some of the light armor are specifically made for the chainmail with lots of gaps, so it would be unwise to fight only in those but with the armor on top of it you can be more agile than people in quilted armor - especially because if you stack like 30 layers of cloth on top of each other, it feels like you could make a pretty decent meatshield for a tank shell and it protects you supergood
then there's people with plated pieces, most of them are from HNB tournaments which are usually held during these historical events and who have lots of armor(youtube those fights if you want) - they're pretty much the top level in terms of beating the shit out of each other. they participate in main battle for the visitors too but they are usually fighting each other and not mixing with the "normal" fighters
funnily enough, even though it doesn't look like that, hnb is safer than normal fencing because you can meet some idiot that can't use spear and it ends up in someone's face in the middle of 50 people pushing each other or there's idiots who underestimate protection and end up getting hurt.
btw did everyone wear heavy armor? or are shirtless beasts jumping over dead bodies swinging swords like conan just a myth
Do you mean the historical events in our age or do you mean the people in the earlier ages (middle age mostly I guess)?
If you mean the earlier ages people didn't even had the wealth to get "proper" armor or even real swords. Metal armor was only something for the wealthy "knights" not even poorer nobles had the money to get a full metal armor. Everybody else had either individual plates for regions they want protected or the had thick wool clothes like arin posted.
As for the twohander: Those were not extremely rare but weren't used much either. Of course they were heavier than normal swords but twohander were mostly used to hack and to make a swath of destruction in the enemies formations. They could even be used in close combat because of their long handles which were used to stab and hack people (I had a youtube recommendation with a good explanation with the usage of two handed swords in the last month... but I can't find it anymore >.<)
i have actually been detained by the police for carrying rapier. They qualified it as a cold weapon and could have imprisoned me but luckily i was only 14
I'd say it's probably just fun. Crossdressing into a trap character is kind of meta.
pretty much this, also i thought that i can pull it off with my body type and height and i knew that several more people from fate will be there (sadly there were only two because rest of them fell ill few days before the con)
also i am still kinda struggling with being sociable even at cons so i thought that this might actually force me to interact with people and stuff and it.. somehow worked
but it was fun mostly, except the part where i've spent like half of saturday forenoon fixing and gluing together stuff that was falling off because of damage during travel
arent real swords pretty heavy? would u even be able to swing it properly
i mean like the big 2handed longswords

lol 1kg
i imagined theyd be somethign like 10kgs
i used to think you had to be pretty stronk and cool to swing one of those bad boys
but i guess any soyboy can do it
not at all lol
10+kg is weight of a chainmail
btw, where in romania do you live? last year we were at oradea near the hungarian borders on some historical festival and we might go there again next summer
i live in bucharest. very far from oradea

1.5 kg? Wtf I thought that's like the weight of a normal sword
^a lot of people don't realize that actual sword were actually remarkably thin
what you see in fantasy are basically clubs, not swords
actual swords are thin, very elastic and lightweight
the only swords heavier than they appear would be rapiers, because they have a very thick 'blade' designed for stabbing
no
yes

why would you become lower when you can just become higher?
whats the appeal of crossdressing arin?
I'd say it's probably just fun. Crossdressing into a trap character is kind of meta.
I have way too much testosterone to ever have any sort of chance to look even remotely like a girl so I wouldn't do it, tho.
