I don't think you can get as many quality cosmetics for the price of the compendium.

if you're planning on getting the compendium then most likely you already play dota often so you're going to level it up, and get several immortal chests and a courier at the very least, when you'd only get a single set from the store for the same money you're paying for the compendium.
