Poor Man's Shield in General Discussion

On certain heroes which have vanguard in their situational items list (say spectre, timbersaw etc) would it be efficient/good practice to upgrade the stout shield to a poor mans shield, then buy the other two components of vanguard without them actually forming a vanguard?

Obviously his takes up a bunch of item slots which is unfortunate, but does having the early game survivability without having to fully commit to a vanguard make up for this?

Say you have upgraded boots/PMS/vit booster/roh/tp/wand this fills up all six slots, does this seem worth the survivability granted which let's you farm up your next damage item (say a diffusal on spectre or bloodstone on timber)? Obviously you can then sell the individual components as you need/build them into other items like linkens/heart, is this a worthy trade off of item slot efficiency to survivability?

not sure why you'd do it on timber, point booster is more efficient than vit booster and is only 100g more. if ive got vanguard gold and im timber, if i dont have arcanes yet then i'd upgrade browns to arcanes for 1k then buy a point booster for 1.2k

if i already had arcanes then i'd spend 2.3k on completing soul booster rather than vit booster + roh + poor mans, soul booster gives a bit of HP regen despite the components not giving any.

pms + vit + roh costs more than the vanguard, uses up 2 more slots, and doesn't give a whole lot more, so I'd just get the vanguard if I was playing spec.

If you hate vanguard so much because of the past, dont worry ice frog has buffed it for a few times
But if you still can't get over it, just stay at ring of health and upgrade to refresher late game, lel

good item, but just get it on agi heroes

Its good on almost any agi melee hero

so having all 3 is a waste of slots, but you could go poor mans + ogre club or something to be built into something else or poor mans + drum maybe.

the semi-uniqueness of vanguard is that it's a tank item that also gives you HP regen. armlet or mek are probably the only two other items that do that in the same price range, but most heroes can't deal with the HP loss of armlet or the mana cost of mek, and comparable items like drum or sange give HP but no regen

6 agility gives practically nothing to timbersaw. If you need the higher HP pool and higher regen I suggest you sell the stout shield. It doesn't affect your survivability all that much on the hero once you have reached that point, stout shield is at its best when you are tanking creeps and Timbersaw does a lot less of this as the game goes on.

The hp regen is why I like it on spec and spec doesn't need a battlefury so nothing to upgrade ring of health into. I guess maybe refresher.
