If you manage your synergies correctly and get lucky with them, you will just win against opponent, who invested much more into his units.
As well, think about items and who has them - I managed to slot 25 armor (2 plate mails & chain mail), hood and cape on my lvl 3 Luna. With the knights shield and lifesteal from warlocks she was almost unkillable and was able to win even 1x5, slowly grinding enemies down while whatever damage they did was mitigated by shield/armor/lifesteal.

Well it depends what you get from drops. Of course in late game with bigger units it is mitigated a bit, but I was once against lvl 3 sniper with desolator and mjolnir, so I had to build 3 assassins just to make sure to kill him before he kills my entire army alone.
I think the most important thing is not to decide which strat you're playing before the game starts, but adapt depending on what the other players are playing. I was able to win with either mechs, knights, warriors, assassins, often times mixed with druids or each other. If more than 2 other players play the same strat you play the game is pretty much lost because you won't get enough chess pieces.
Barely using rerolls until you are at 50 gold seems to be pretty good, too.
Right now it's very easy to reach top 3 pretty much every round, winning depends on how lucky you get with items and rolls.
Level four is the first round where you will vs other players. If you have enough gold it is often a good idea to levelup and put a 4th piece on the board. An early 4th piece will pretty much ensure that you win that round and set you up for an earlygame winstreak which helps you get to 50 gold faster and start rolling for good pieces.
Went 6 warriors plus hunters but won before I could get the 3 hunters out, by the end had a lvl 3 axe, tusk, jugg, slardar, and lycan plus a lvl 2 troll and medusa plus a lvl 1 doom just for the doom effect. I definitely got lucky but if you can get 6 warriors out early and build up some economy its very strong. Just make sure you aren't against any mage builds because your warriors will suffer.
I played two matches after i watched some streams, first game i failed, second game i tried a bit harder and came second. The game itself is quite fun but i rather play dota.
ADAPTATION is KEY. What bugs me though is the item drops. Had games where I don't get any items from the creep wave. Combining heroes to the next tier also consumes time especially mid game unless you really have fast hand reflexes.

I only Upgrade courier 2 times before round 10 and never roll until 50 Gold.
